gift-553150_1280

What are appropriate giveaways for corporate parties?

  1. Stemless Champagne Flutes/Wine Glasses
  2. Bottle Stoppers
  3. Paperweights
  4. Flash Drives
  5. Stress Balls

Corporate events are ones that are to be wildly celebrated with a hint of professionalism of course. These are usually high-energy, memorable events that commemorate significant milestones in the professional area.

It’s full of everything you could want from a bash – delicious corporate catering, live performances, spectacular performances, etc. But no matter how simple, elegant, or outright lavish it may be, giveaway favors at the end are a must have. This is because these are signs of appreciation for any employee who attends.

If you’re looking for ideas to turn into corporate giveaways, then you may want to consider the following items to give away at your next corporate event:

Stemless Champagne Flutes/Wine Glasses

This is one of the more delicate giveaways on the list because it is more suited as gifts for parties during the holidays.

The sleek, modern design of these glasses is a twist on traditional stemmed glassware which has a narrow rim and a slender bowl. It was the stem design that allowed drinkers to preserve carbonation in sparkling beverages by allowing them to keep their warm hand away from the bowl of the glass. The stem less version of this glassware is considered to be more casually used than their stemmed counterparts as it supposedly negates the benefits of the original design.

Being the latest in elegant designs in kitchen and dining experiences, stemless champagne flutes and wine glasses feature a design that minimizes the risk of breakage without compromising its real purpose. When picking the particular brand and model of this glassware, choose one of high quality with a chip-resistant rim.

This idea for a giveaway is something that exudes luxury in the air. Though you can find them in different department stores for varying prices, one thing’s for sure: with this gift, you’ll know how to make your guests feel fancy as heck.

Bottle Stopper

Stoppers – sometimes called corks or bungs – are cylindrical or conical objects meant to close or seal a container. The stoppers used on bottle are especially handy when storing a recently opened bottle of wine because it can be very difficult to replace the original cork.

These bottle stoppers can vary in shape, size, materials, and even functionality. Newer models are designed to expand inside the bottleneck in order to ensure an air tight seal which helps to keep your wine as fresh as the day it’s brought it home. There are also some wine bottle stoppers that are vacuum sealed with a hand pump in order to remove the oxygen inside the bottle; extending the shelf life of the wine to several days.

This is the giveaway to have at your event if you want your guests to reward their hard work with wine for days.

Paperweight

By definition, a paperweight is a small object of solid mass that is placed over top of books and papers to keep them in place, especially in a work space. It doesn’t need to be too heavy; just enough weight in it to keep the papers from being disorganized.

Fine glass paperweights are considered collectibles and they come in any shape, size, or form. They are even considered to be fine works of art since these are usually sculpted by fine artists specializing in glass blowing and shaping.

These are great souvenirs for a corporate party since they are small, compact, and can be personalized in limited editions. You can even give different variations of them as gifts, to make sure everyone gets something unique and something to talk about when they come the next work day. Also, paperweights are one of the ideas that can be easily afforded by many; even the designer ones.

Flash Drive

A USB flash drive is a data storage device that includes flash memory with an integrated USB interface. With most jobs nowadays requiring 24/7 access to a computer and convenient means of file transfer, who wouldn’t want this particular corporate giveaway to make their everyday work life easier?

The emergence of this device have made floppy drives and CDs as a means of file transfer completely obsolete. This is because flash drives are smaller, faster, and more durable since they have no moving parts. Everything is digital. This is also what makes them capable of storing large amounts of data. Usually this is what dictate the monetary value of a USB flash drive. The more data it can store, then the higher its price will be.

A flash drive is perfect as a giveaway for a corporate party because of their extreme usefulness as an office gadget.

Stress Balls

Stress balls are objects filled with a malleable gel or clay that you hold in the palm of your hand. The act of squeezing the ball repeatedly releases the tension in the body and helps to relieve stress. It has a lot of benefits like boosting blood circulation and helping the treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome.

Stress balls are also useful for office workers because of these benefits. Aside from that, they are used as a tool for meditation and can help strengthen the muscles of the hand and wrist. Another cool thing about stress balls is they come in various shapes, sizes, and colors. They can be as cute as a pastel-colored balls or funky, brightly colored squeeze toys.

Key Takeaway

There you have it! Some ideas for your next corporate gathering.

With these ideas, you’ll be able to establish a strong sense of camaraderie with your colleagues. Just remember that work doesn’t have to always be on the serious note; it can make you feel like you aren’t working a day in your life at all.

Salad Galore! The 4 Common Types of Salad

salads juan carlo

Vegetables are an essential part of anyone’s diet. In fact, an entire menu and method of preparation for vegetables was developed using vegetables as the main ingredients. These are called salads.

An extremely versatile meal, salads are appropriate for any occasion, whether it be a work brunch, a dinner date, and even in corporate catering in Manila. Usually what’s available in the menu are set salads, but the beauty of this dish is that, if done at home or at a salad bar, you can adjust the proportions and even the ingredients to whatever you please!

Different Strokes for Different Folks

It’s no secret that individuals differ in their taste preference. This is why it is extremely efficient that salads are very flexible in terms of ingredients and preparation. There are many ways to prepare a salad and quite frankly, anyone can have their own version of the popular Caesar salad. Some people may enjoy it with carrots while other people would rather have corn as a side. In short, salads have no fixed recipe and people are free to mix and match whatever recipe they want. That’s what makes salads so fun and amazing. They are delicious no matter how they are prepared because people can prepare them in their own, special way.

Not All Salads Are The Same

Salads as mentioned above are really flexible because they can be prepared however someone wants them prepared. However, there are a few traditional ways to make a salad and here they are:

Tossed Salads

Tossed salads are the most common form of salad that you can see on a regular basis. They are present at parties, caterings and even the occasional dinners at home. They are made by combining vegetables, dressings and some meat in a bowl. The body, or the main component of the salad relies on leafy vegetables such as lettuce or spinach. Nuts, cheeses and fruits are often added into tossed salads to increase the flavor and the volume of the meal.

Composed Salads

Composed salads are a more organized version of tossed salads. Their main ingredients vary but they still rely on vegetables. However, the main difference between tossed salads and composed salads is the overall theme. Composed salads are more organized and they are all individually crafted to be orderly.

Bound Salads

Bound salads are a more hearty form of salads and they are bonded together by an ingredient such as mayonnaise or a special type of vinaigrette.

Farinaceous Salads

Similar to tossed salads, their main difference lie in the main ingredient. Farinaceous salads are mainly made with potatoes or pasta and these hearty meals are filling and delicious.

Of course, these traditional salads are merely guides on how to create your own salad. However, the best part about salads is that, as stated above, they can be finely crafted entirely according to your preference. However, if you’d like a professional’s take on salads then why not give Juan Carlo’s menu a try at your next big event?

Coffee: Revitalizer or Bone destructor?

What are the pros and cons of drinking coffee regularly?

  1. Pro: It decreases the risk of type-2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s, and Parkinson’s disease.
  2. Pro: It increases productivity and antioxidant levels.
  3. Con: It’s highly addictive with sever withdrawal symptoms.
  4. Con: The usual condiments in coffee lead to weight gain.
  5. Con: It increases cholesterol levels and risk of dehydration and osteoporosis.

What keeps majority of employees buzzing like busy bees? The answer is fairly obvious – coffee. It is the most basic pick-me-up for people in the workforce and even students. Whether it be at the pantry or at an event with corporate catering, coffee is the one beverage that people are sure to look for.

How Popular is Coffee?

Coffee, as we all know by now, is a caffeinated beverage that is, essentially, an energy booster. People enjoy drinking because it gives them the energy they need to get motivated at the start of a day. At the same time, it’s soothing and relaxing, which makes it a great drink for afternoon bonding with a friend. People enjoy chilled, piping hot, or what have you. Truly, it has become a staple in everyday life.

According to ScienceDirect.com, at least 85% of the population of the United States of America consume one glass of caffeine a day. (Mitchell, Knight, Hockenberry, Teplansky, & Hartman, 2013). Based on this, a huge number of people drink coffee United States alone. Bet you didn’t know that! It makes you wonder what the statistic is worldwide.

Based on the above statistics, a lot of people drink coffee in the United States alone. The question now is this: how good, or bad, is coffee for you?

The Good

Reduced Risk of Diabetes

According to the journal of the American Medical Association, people who consume more than 3 servings of coffee daily decreases their risk of type-2 diabetes by a significantly (van Dam & Hu, 2005). In fact, this risk is shown to reduce by 7% with every cup of coffee added daily.  Research also shows that people’s preferences with coffee, whether caffeinated or not, did not affect the chances of decreasing their risk of type-2 diabetes.

Reduced Parkinson’s Risk

Another benefit of drinking two to three cups of coffee daily is added protection from Parkinson’s disease. Such daily consumption of coffee can decrease the risk of the said disease by as much as 25%.

An Effective Antioxidant

Another positive aspect of coffee is that it is scientifically proven to be an effective antioxidant, kind of like tea. Coffee beans contain a significant amount of phytochemicals which are proven be effective antioxidants. Antioxidants are substances or elements similar to vitamin E or vitamin C that eliminates potentially damaging oxidizing agents in a biological organism.

Reduced Alzheimer’s Risk

Although it has yet to be identified, there is a mystery ingredient in coffee that is currently being studied. The current research shows that this ingredient X, when combined with coffee, can increase G-CFS levels. For those that don’t know, G-CFS means Granulocyte-Colony Stimulating Factor. When this has high levels in the human body, it gains an increased ability to prevent Alzheimer’s disease. This relation between ingredient X and G-FCS has, so far, been tested with positive results on laboratory mice. In humans, so far, G-FCS level can be seen rising when one consumes four to five cups of coffee daily.

Increased Productivity

Research has also shown that people who drink coffee in the morning manage to retain more information as well as learn new concepts faster throughout the day, as opposed to those who do not. In other words, coffee allows its drinkers to improve their cognitive functions in terms of working memory and continuous attention.

The Bad

Increased Cholesterol Levels

Unfiltered coffee, such as espressos and lattes, have been shown to increase cholesterol levels. Luckily, filtered coffee doesn’t do this. This is because when you use a filter for brewing your coffee, you only you remove two substances the increase cholesterol: kahweol and cafestol. Thus, doing so is healthier for you.

However, some evidence points toward decaffeinated coffee as another cause for rising cholesterol levels. More research needs to be conducted when

Weight Gain

Coffee itself isn’t associated with weight gain, but the usual condiments added to it are. These usual suspects are sugar, milk, and cream, which make any coffee drink delicious. If you are looking to lose weight, but still have coffee in your diet, then you should either significantly lessen these condiments or not use them at all (e.g. black coffee). This is strongly recommended for those who have weight loss diets that their life depends on.

Addiction

Caffeine is highly addictive, especially when consumed every day. When one has coffee daily and stops this routine all of a sudden, he can experience severe withdrawals. These can be any of the following:

  1. Fatigue
  2. Irritability
  3. Headaches
  4. Jitters
  5. Insomnia
  6. Mood swings

Decaffeinated coffee drinkers aren’t safe from this as well. Even if their coffee of choice only has small amounts of caffeine, they can still get addicted to it.

A big factor as to why it is so addictive is because it triggers the brains to release large amounts of dopamine. This is an organic chemical that makes people feel pleasure and it causes the “buzz” that coffee drinkers always crave for.

Increased Osteoporosis Risk

Coffee, however, has also been proven to increase the risk of osteoporosis and osteoporotic fracture. This is due to the fact that it causes the human body to excrete calcium along with waste while urinating. The loss of calcium in the body can lead to the bones deteriorating to the point of developing osteoporosis.

Dehydration

In addition, coffee has also been proven to dehydrate people who regularly drink it, leading to wrinkles and other dermatological imperfections. Therefore, coffee drinkers are advised to drink a glass of water per cup of coffee that they consume at any given time to compensate.

Key Takeaway

All in all, those who regularly drink coffee may keep doing so if you take into account the cons. Like all good things, coffee must be taken in moderation and coupled with plain water, and to consume non-dairy food that are high in calcium. This is the best way to ensure that you can reap the benefits without putting yourself at too much risk for the disadvantages.

In this blog post, we will introduce and briefly discuss the types of food that boost productivity and concentration.

Blueberries

Research shows that blueberries boost “concentration and memory” for up to five hours “because the antioxidants in blueberries stimulate the flow of blood and oxygen to the brain – and keep the mind fresh”. Blueberries are affordable and delicious and best of all, they’re healthy.

Bananas

Bananas are rich in vitamins and minerals and specifically, glucose. According to researcher Leigh Gibson of Roehampton University in England, “The brain works best with about 25 grams of glucose circulating in the blood stream — about the amount found in a banana.” Bananas offer a quick energy boost and they’re scrumptious to boot.

Eggs

A staple of breakfast, eggs offer a delicious meal that can be prepared in any number of ways from a quick and easy sunny side-up to the elegant and delicious omelets to the healthier on-the-go boiled. According to Vivian Giang and Aimee Groth of Business Insider, “Eggs contain fat-like B vitamin called choline that enhances memory and reaction time.”

Fatty Fish

Most fatty fish are rich in omega-3s, iron, B-Vitamins and protein which support focus, memory, reasoning and recall. (Byrd) Salmon, Mackarel, Herring, Sardines and Tuna are just a few fatty fish that contain these benefits.

Eggplant

Another egg-type entry in the list, “Eggplant skin contains a nutrient called nasunin which keeps our brain sharp by enhancing communication between our brain cells and messenger molecules. “

Yogurt

Delicious and a component of many delicious meals and sauces, “calcium rich foods such as yogurt, milk and cheese improve nerve function. Yogurt contains an amino acid called tyrosine which is responsible for producing the neurotransmitters dopamine and noradrenaline.” To summarize all that, yoghurt improves memory and alertness. Delicious and versatile, yogurt is healthy and easy to find and is a perfect addition to any corporate event.

Dark Chocolate

Not only does dark chocolate boost the production of “feel-good” chems called endorphins, they also reproduce the feeling of “euphoria” people get from exercising. According to an editorial by CNN, “preliminary research at West Virginia’s Wheeling Jesuit University suggests chocolate may boost your memory, attention span, reaction time, and problem-solving skills by increasing blood-flow to the brain.”

Green Tea

This drink is a natural energy enhancer. Since it isn’t made from energy-fabricating ingredients, it also doesn’t have any of the side effects of usual energy boosters. This makes it popular amongst health buffs who work long hours while still squeezing in a workout at the end of the day. Their green tea of choice is matcha which has been gaining mainstream popularity over recent years – most especially in New York City. Unlike other green teas, matcha actually uses a whole green tea leaf that is ground into fine powder. By being able to ingest the whole leaf, a whole family of antioxidants, fiber, and polyphenols will be introduced to the human body.

Nuts

Nuts are healthy for a number of reasons. For one, it’s a great source of protein and natural fat, which are healthy for the human body. Additionally, it’s a rich food that is high in antioxidants, vitamin E, and amino acids. These are the nutrients that the body needs in order increase memory and brain power.

For the best nuts to consume, grab some walnuts and almonds. These have the best ingredients for boosting brain health and productivity.

Avocados

In order for one to be productive, the flow blood through the brain and around the heart must be smooth and consistent. To ensure that you have this consistent flow in your body, eat some Avocados. This fruit is a natural stimulant that enhances the flow of blood and provides healthy fats. Not only will it get the brain cells working at their best, but it’s also very tasty. Who said that healthy foods need to taste bad?

Water

While it may not be a food, it must be added to this list because of how essential it is for productivity. Basically, the whole body will function well if it has enough water in it. It uses it to do its daily functions, which means that it depletes throughout the day. When the water levels in your body get too low, then your brain and the rest of your body won’t perform at its best.

To make sure that you always have enough water in your body, have at least 8 glasses of water a day. This will keep your brain powered up, focused, and thinking quickly and clearly.

Brown Rice

The healthiest ingredient in brown rice is magnesium. With an ample amount of this in your body, not only will you be more productive, but you will also be more relaxed. This is because it has been shown to be able to relieve stress. Also, it is loaded with the vitamins that you need for your body to work at its best. Don’t Whine about Wine: A Guide to Pairing Wine and Cheese

wine cheese corporate catering

How to pair wine and cheese?

  1. With wines containing tannin, it’s best to pair a wine with strong tanning with older cheeses, and the low ones with younger cheeses.
  2. Pair a cheese and wine that are from the same region as they do go best together.
  3. Similar to wines, cheeses are not equal in age. Hence, when pairing wines and cheeses, it’s best to match those that are of the same age, the young cheese with young wine, and the old cheese with old wine to achieve a better combination.
  4. While some cheeses do not usually taste good as it may be too salty, they create a perfect pair with those sweet wines, hence a perfect blend.
  5. The best go-to pair for cheeses are white ones as it has higher levels of acid creating a mouthwatering sensation.
  6. One way to best pair wines and cheeses is to imagine pairing cheese with food as wines are made from fruits, nuts, and more hence it will be so much easier.
  7. Take advantage of the contrasting flavor such as the bubbles in a sparkling wine that counters the texture of a rich cheese.

You might be thinking all wines can be drunk with all cheese and all cheese can be eaten with all wines. While technically it is possible, this is not the best approach. The idea is to find the perfect match of cheese and wine that will enhance each other’s flavor. Don’t pair the Camembert with Port— get the Chenin Blanc! When in doubt, ask your corporate catering provider for their recommendation. Otherwise, here are a few tips for pairing wine and cheese pairing for your next party or gathering.

Tannin Time

You may have heard teas containing tannin, but did you know that wines also contain tannin? It can be found in the stems, skin and seeds of the grapes. What this textural element does to the wine is make it more “dry”. Darker grapes have higher tannins, thus red wine has more tannin than white wine. In addition, the wine can get tannin from wood, which is why there are certain types of wood barrels for specific wines. Pair wines strong with tannins such as a Tempranillo for older cheeses while serving those low in tannin such as a Beaujolais for younger cheeses.

Know the Origin

It is said that cheese and wine from the same region often go great together. For example, Cheese from the French region of the Loire is best paired with a Sauvignon Blanc made in the area of Sancarre from the valley of the Loire. Its citrus and spicy notes best complement the slightly sweet flavors of the goat cheese, Chabichou du Poutou.

Age is Important

Get those dates ready because in this round, age is the name of the game. Not all cheeses are on the same timetable; some may take weeks to mature while others take years before it can be ready to be served to the guests. This aging process, called affinage, has a strong effect on the flavor. This is because during this time period, the water in the cheese evaporates, which then leaves behind the fat and protein that form the cheese. The older it is, the richer the flavor. For example, a younger Gouda aged for four months has a light fudgy nut, mild taste while Gouda aged over two years having a near butterscotch flavor.

When it comes to wine, it is often said the older the wine the better thus the reason why there is a huge price difference between a three year old Merlot and a twenty year old one. The three year old may have a fresher flavor with floral and citrusy notes while the older one may have a stronger, more robust flavor.

Young cheeses are best with their counterpart— fresh, young wine such as a dry rosé or a sparkling white. An older cheese would be best paired with a nuttier, older wine to match its bold tones and oxidative notes.

Salt + Sweet = Perfect Blend

Balance is important, especially when it comes to food which is why salty cheeses are excellent with sweeter wines. For example, Blue cheese may turn off some people by its smell, but its salty flavor is best with a sweet sherry. Aged Gouda will do well with a bubbly champagne or a fruity Riesling.

Match the Acid Level

The wines, especially the white ones, tend to have a higher level of acidity and lighter body. Hence, pairing cheese with this type of wine is easier as it equally complements the flavor. For instance, a white Muscat wine can complement the flavor of gorgonzola, monte enebro, valdeon, fourme d’ambert, and blu del moncenisio cheeses.

Cheese and Fruits and Nuts

One of the keys to make cheese and wines go well is to imagine what food is best paired to a particular wine. For example, juicy, tasty fruits are best paired with young cheeses like Brie, while bitter, buttery nuts go well when paired with salty cheeses such as Stilton. With this in mind, it will be easier to pair wines with the different kinds of cheeses.

Take Advantage of Contrasting Flavors

In most cases, it’s much easier to pair complementing flavors as they create a harmonious palate sensation. However, contrasting flavors can also be turned into your advantage, for instance the bubbles in a sparkling wine can be a perfect counterpoint to a rich, creamy cheese as it cleanses the tongue, making you want for more. A popular pairing of this is the champagne and camembert.

The Perfect Pairings

Look no further! Here’s the ultimate guide for wine and cheese pairings that do go well.

  16. Show your gratitude to the chef. Buy him sake if you want to give him a tip.

Sushi, a popular type of food with its origins firmly rooted in Japan, has become a worldwide favorite. What was once a rather rare and local delicacy has now expanded into the palates of people all around the world. For example, here in the Philippines, sushi is a popular choice for corporate catering events – especially those being held in Manila. The same can be said for other countries such as the US, Canada, Australia, and even Hong Kong, where restaurant chains that serve Japanese cuisine exclusively are present and thriving.

What many people forget is that, despite sushi’s deceivingly simple appearance and balanced taste, there exists a whole culture that backs it up. Unlike most other dishes that may be eaten simply by placing it in one’s mouth, sushi has a particular set of customs attributed to it. Although it is not strictly enforced in other counties as it is in Japan, observing these rules will show you pay respect to its origins.

Here are the basic do’s and don’ts when eating sushi:

Before the Meal

Especially when you are looking to eat in a non-chain sushi restaurant it is important to give the venue a call. This is not just to make a reservation, but also to inform them of any restrictions in your diet. Japanese restaurants all have the strong desire to please their customers, but must know beforehand of any allergies and medical limitations in order to accommodate you to the best of its abilities.

When you make a reservation, be sure to show up because no-shows are looked down upon. You must understand that sushi must be served fresh and it will be wasted if you make them prepare your meals and then have to throw it away. Because of this waste of ingredient, you may still be asked to pay for the meal even if you didn’t show up.

Also, prepare some cash just to be sure because some sushi restaurant does not accept credit cards

Lastly, do not wear strong perfume or cologne when you are about to enter the restaurant. This is because sushi was made to be enjoyed, not only because of the taste, but also because of the smell. Carrying a strong aroma with you can ruin the experience for yourself and the people around you. This is especially true in the most upscale sushi restaurants where it is usually housed in small and narrow spaces.

Mastering Sushi Etiquette

Beginning the Meal

Like said above, the sushi will be made fresh by the chef. While waiting, it’s a good practice to order appetizers and drinks from the server should you feel the need to munch on something. Edamame (boiled soy beans), Suimono (clear broth), or Misoshiru (fermented soybean soup) are the common orders; as for the drinks green tea or water will suffice. Refrain from getting strong tasting foods as to not wash out the taste of the sushi once it comes – part of the joys of partaking in sushi is enjoying the fair taste of the fish and the rice.

Before starting the meal itself, wipe your hands with the warm towel provided and ensue your hands are clean. Pick up the sushi with your hands – this is considered as good manners because it keeps the perfect form the chef made the sushi in. But if eating sashimi or ginger, use chopsticks instead.

A side note: when the chopsticks are not in use, do not lay it flat on the table or on your plate. Use the ceramic holder that’s usually provided or make one using the paper wrapper the chopstick came in.

Mastering Sushi Etiquette

Eating

In Japanese culture, it is recommended to eat sushi in a certain order for the best experience. It is said that you must first start with whitefish and lighter sushi and work your way towards the oilier items like toro and grilled eel.

Eat the first bite without any added condiments or the like so you know how it tastes on its own. If it ends up not being to your taste, feel free to dip it into a bit of soy sauce – do not put it in rice down (and avoid mixing the wasabi in). Instead, flip it over and dip the fish side instead; see to it that you do not add too much sauce – this would insinuate that the chef did not do his job properly and that the sushi does not taste good. Traditionally, the chef would already add the necessary amount of wasabi to make the perfect sushi. Adding more would be insulting to the chef so as much as possible, try to eat it as it’s served. Place it on your tongue, face down for the full flavor and do your best to eat everything in one bite. If it’s not possible, do it in two and ask the chef to proportion it for you – understand that the chefs want to cater to your wants, it’s his job, so let him do it.

In-between bites of sushi, especially differing ones, pick up bits of ginger slices in order to cleanse your palate. Do this only when your mouth is empty and do not chew the ginger with the sushi.

Ending the Meal

Especially if you avail of the omakase course (which basically means “chef’s choice”) then you must absolutely finish what you order. Failure to do so is considered rude. This is why you want to call ahead of time regarding your dietary restrictions. If you are served something that you cannot eat and you don’t, then you will still be considered rude; the chefs will argue that you should have told them of any of your allergies and medical limitations.

When finished, give credit where it is due. Praise the chef if they created your perfect sushi, after all, there are few things in the world that can make one happier other than being told they’ve done a job well done. Should you find yourself wanting to express your sincere gratitude, don’t tip the chef. Buy him a drink (sake!) instead, and enjoy it together. Cheers!

Key Takeaway

So when you find yourself dining out in a high class restaurant or requesting it from your local caterer for your event – with friends or otherwise – remember these simple manners to avoid committing any social faux pas.

The History of Sugar

kakanin

What is the history of sugar?

  1. Began in New Guinea 10,000 years ago when sugarcane was successfully domesticated
  2. In 500 BC, Indians were producing sugar in the form of cooled syrup molded in large bowls.
  3. In 350 AD, people began to develop a way to convert sugar into a crystallized form.
  4. In 400 AD, people began trading sugar.
  5. In 650 AD, sugar plantations were being built and used.
  6. In the 9th-10th centuries, the Muslims have begun to integrate sugar into their cuisine.
  7. In the 14th-15th centuries, sugar production in Europe spiked through slave labor.
  8. In the 18th century, sugar became a household spice.

As anyone who offers catering services in Manila will tell you, a traditional Pinoy feast is never complete without any form of kakanin – desserts comprised of sweetened rice. After all, it’s customary to eat sweets after a meal; the Filipino variant is no different. The same practice is observed worldwide- indeed, the whole concept of the dessert itself is a testament to the importance of sugar.

It wasn’t always so readily available like it is now, though. It involved an extreme amount of work and various processes to enable its production at the time. Nonetheless, strange as it seems, sugar used to be a rare and expensive luxury.

It all began in New Guinea about 10,000 years ago when they were able to successfully domesticate sugar cane. Over time their knowledge of the plant spread to Southeast Asia, southern China, and eventually India, where conditions were perfect for sugar cultivation. In 500 BC, Indians began producing considerable quantities of sugar in the form of cooled syrup molded in large flat bowls; this made the product easier to transport. (They called it khanda, and today this form is more universally recognized as candy.) As time passed they grew more familiar with sugar and eventually by around 350 AD, they developed a way to convert it into a crystallized form.

This made trading the sugar easier, and since they were the only ones with it during the time – about 400AD – trading proved to be incredibly prolific; everywhere the Indians went they shared their expertise with others. Land caravans and trading ships to the Middle East and China carried the Indians’ knowledge over to their territories, and by 650 AD China had sugar cane plantations of their own.

Fast forward to the 9th-10th century where the Muslims had already created a more efficient way of manufacturing sugar and had integrated the ingredient into their cuisine; their sweet products were appreciated by those who were lucky enough to try them. When European warriors descended upon the Muslim during the crusades, they were able to bring some of the “sweet spice” back to their homeland, which attracted the attention of the middle to high class citizens – thus kick-starting an influx of western traders that tried to find their fortune in the East. Nonetheless, sugar prices did not drop at all on account of sugar being very difficult to produce.

Sugar production in Europe spiked during the 14th and 15th century, though the hard work usually fell into the hands of the slaves.

When the 1500s rolled in and European settlers made their way into the Carribean, they found that the lands were perfect for sugar cultivation. Since demand was so high, sugarcane mills started popping up one by one and pushed for the need for more quick, industrial methods of production, thus being the catalyst for the Industrial Revolution that would start at the 17th century. The abundance of producers finally brought the price of sugar down to more acceptable levels, allowing some of the lower class citizens to access it too.

Of course, with the rise of the mills came the demand for cheap labor, and so the slave trade boomed. A lot of the slaves ended up in the Caribbean, further dropping its prices to more than acceptable levels and ending the trade Europe had with India. Sugar popularity remained at an all-time high, leading to the invention of other sweet foods such as jams, coffee, teas, and candies. At the end of the 18th century sugar became a common household spice.

As time passes by, the production of sugar has been simplified enough to make it as widely available as it is now. While it was only available to the elites of that era, sugar can now be accessed by and for the masses. Also, without sugar, the desserts known and loved by many will not have come to fruition today.

In fact, the earliest known dessert was the standard fruit by itself. Its sweet taste and mass availability made it easy for people of any generation grab a bite. Eventually, industrialization dawned, and the concepts of bakeshops were introduced.

Though baking itself isn’t exactly an innovation of industrialization as there have been instances of ancient civilizations utilizing heat to create doughy treats, baking was given a serious upgrade at the time with the introduction of ovens and, eventually, confectionaries.

Since its inception in 1851, the process of powdering sugar has been perfected by none other than Oliver Chase. During that year, he developed a mill to perfect the process, which in turn has brought to the world the desserts and treats known by many.

Take for instance, the doughnut. This deep-fried delicacy dusted with powdered sugar has been around for many generations. Another notable example of this is the various candies that were up for grabs during the time. Even before the entrance of the 21st century, sugary treats have become a staple in livelihood and general human memory.

Coming into the 21st century, the process of distributing and creating sugar for various purposes have all been at people’s convenience. A wide array of sugar varieties has been made available for everyone, which in turn leads to the creation of even newer desserts and treats. Sugar has also helped the restaurant industry grow into what it is today, with a majority of their attractions being their desserts. With the evolution of time and the constant perfection of every process, there is no doubt that sugar will continue to bring an impact onto future societies.

Key Takeaway

Sugar has had a tumultuous, interesting journey throughout the annals of human history and culture. It’s considered to be one of the most influential commodities humans have come across, its effects equal to that of gold. It has helped shape the culinary world into the giant it is today and has continued to bring joy in the hearts of their customers worldwide. So, the next time you grab a spoonful of it, remember that it took centuries of effort to get it there.
